## Numeracy

How to solve the book trick.

You have all witnessed the maths book trick – now you can wow other people with it.

Take any book – find page 108, line 9 and write the first word down.

Choose any 3 numbers

eg 3 7 and 9. Put them in any order to make a 3 digit number – 397. Switch this number round (793) and subtract the smaller number from the larger number.

So 793 – 397 = 396

Take your answer and switch this round , this gives you 693.

Add together the last 2 numbers you have made – 396 + 693 = 1089

When you do this to any 3 digits, the answer will always be 1089. As long as the difference between the first and last digit on the 3 digit number is greater than 1.

Take any book, find page 108, line 9 and read out the first word.

Leave a comment when you have tried it – let me know how you get on.
